Copa América is the main international football competition in America, and is run by CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation. It is the oldest international tournament in the world starting in 1916. It is important to note that usually two or three CONCACAF teams get an invitation to participate. Mexico has been a regular since they were invited for the first time in 1993. The participating nations are Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Two invited teams from other confederations complete the 12-team field. As CONMEBOL only has the 10 members mentioned above, there is no qualification tournament, neither is there a qualification tournament for invitees; they are invited on their own merits, such as by winning matches in World Cup finals or from qualification stages in their confederations. Mexico and USA are the two invitees for the 2007 cup.

Distribution of championships won...

Copa América preview

The 42nd edition of international football's oldest competition kicks off on Tuesday night, and every game from the Copa America will be shown live on Sky Sports.

The South American competition will take place in Venezuela for the first time and the continent's finest sides, as well as invitees United States and Mexico, will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Brazil who won the competition in 2004.

Former World Cup winner Dunga is now at the helm of the Samba stars and will be wary of the challenge of historic rivals Argentina, who lost in a dramatic penalty shoot-out in the final three years ago.

Brazil may be lacking world superstars such as Kaka and Ronaldinho, but their squad is still bursting with talent.

Argentina boast Carlos Tevez, Javier Mascherano and Gabriel Heinze with a whole array of stars from all over the continent hoping to bring their country glory.

Gold Cup winners United States and beaten finalists Mexico are also along for the ride after being nominated as this year's invited teams.

The top two in each group, and the two best third-placed finishers, will then make up the quarter-finalists.

If Argentina or Uruguay triumph in the final in Maracaibo on 15th July then they will edge ahead in the history books with a 15th victory in the competition, with Brazil surprisingly lagging behind with just seven wins.

Peru v Uruguay preview - Match 1 Grupo A

The 2007 Copa America opens in Merida as Uruguay play Peru, in an intriguing clash that will provide an insight into some of the strengths and weaknesses of Group A.

Peru travel to Venezuela with criticism ringing in collective ears, following indifferent preparation for the tournament, but it is coach Julio Caesar Uribe's that will be burning brightest.

The 3-3-2-2 he has employed most often has not sat well with the Peru faithful and, it is a narrow formation which, somewhat predictably, has manifest criticism from Newcastle wide man Nolberto Solano - a high profile absentee.

Peru can, though, call on Chelsea new boy Claudio Pizarro and all eyes at Stamford Bridge will be on the bustling forward, as they look to garner more information on their acquisition from Bayern Munich.

Alongside Pizarro will be the pacey presence of Jefferson Farfan and following what was a hugely impressive campaign with Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, he too will be confident of posing problems in Venezuela.

Peru have tasted Copa America glory back in 1939 and 1975 and while they are unlikely to complete a hat-trick in 2007, they could yet pose the odd problem for some of this year's more fancied contenders.

Perennial dark horses Uruguay commence the tournament without their talisman Alvaro Recoba, courtesy of a thigh injury that is threatening to derail his country's chances of glory.

The extent of the injury has yet to be ascertained, but what is clear is that Fabian Estoyanoff will step-in as his replacement for the Peru clash.

At the other end of the field, Diego Lugano finished Uruguay's last training session with ice strapped around his knee, but it is thought such action was precautionary and he is expected to start.

Diego Forlan has rued Recoba's absence in the local press but with clubs across Europe, and in particular the Premier League, watching the former Manchester United misfit, it will be on the Villarreal hit-man's shoulders that the goalscoring burden rests.

my best wishes for Uruguay tonight... Wink

Peru won the match a good start but it is still a plenty of work to do..
Oh the third goal..
Guerrero rubbed salt into the wounds when he added a third two minutes from time....

Ecuador - Chile Preview -match 3 Grupo B

Ecuador are hoping to build on their impressive run in last summer's World Cup finals by improving on their poor record in the Copa America.

They have only reached the knock-out stage twice since 1959 and that was when the tournament was played at altitude in Ecuador.

Ecuador are set to field a number of familiar faces against Chile with the likes of Reading's Ulises de la Cruz, Wigan's Antonio Valencia and PSV Eindhoven midfielder Edison Mendez all expected to start.

Ivan Hurtado is set to captain Ecuador, but they are missing star striker Agustin Delgado through suspension.

Carlos Tenorio and Felix Borja are expected to lead the attack for Luis Fernando Suarez's men in the absence of Delgado.

Chile are building for the future after missing out on last summer's World Cup in Germany and they are expected to field a youthful side in Venezuela.

Liverpool's Mark Gonzalez is expected to feature after ending his international wilderness earlier this year.

Highly-rated midfielder Jorge Valdivia is expected to have a starring role for Nelson Acosta's side.

Humberto Suazo and veteran striker Reinaldo Navia are expected to start in attack for Chile.

I am expecting another surprise tonight
Ecuador could win tonight Rolling Eyes

Brazil - Mexico Preview - match 4 Grupo B

Brazil open up their Copa America campaign with a tricky clash against Mexico.

Both sides are expected to progress from Group B so the game could prove to be a battle for top spot.

Defending champions Brazil will not be at full-strength, with the likes of Kaka and Ronaldinho rested and Ronaldo and Roberto Carlos overlooked.

There will still be an abundance of talent on show and the likes of Robinho and Wagner Love will look to step up and take on the starring roles.

Werder Bremen playmaker Diego will also have the chance to demonstrate why he was once hailed as the new Zico, and he has been tipped to be one of the players of the tournament.

And full-back Maicon has warned that it would be dangerous to underestimate Brazil.

"The group comes well prepared, with much dedication," he explained.

The Mexican side will also have an unfamiliar look to it, as Jared Borgetti and Andres Guardado are injured and Ricardo Osorio, Pavel Pardo and Carlos Salcido have been left out.

Mexico have not been in good form of late and lost 2-1 to USA in the Concacaf Gold Cup at the weekend.

However, captain and talisman Rafael Marquez is back in action and confident his side can perform strongly in Venezuela.

"Several players are not here but those that have replaced them are also great players and for that reason they are in the selection," he said.
