Colombia - Paraguay - match 5 Grupo C
Both teams take a brand new leap of faith as new eras begin towards becoming the teams that they were well over a decade ago.
The Cafeteros look to move out of the Francisco Maturana shadow as his presence, as well as his absence were keys to the national team’s step sideways. The Colombian Football Federation could not stand to be absent from a third consecutive World Cup.
The squad that new coach Jorge Luis Pinto brings to Venezuela is a combination of old and new. Players like Iván Ramiro Córdoba, Mario Alberto Yepes, and Miguel Calero know that this could be their last hurrah and would like to win at least one more Copa América prior to calling it quits. Meanwhile for the newbies like Hugo Rodallega, Andrés Chitiva, Edixon Perea it is a chance to bring Colombia to the upper echelon of South America.
Paraguay’s disappointing form in last year’s World Cup saw the end to several of the veterans that former goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert referred to as too old. This new generation of players will be under a coach that is looking to change and give some sort of metamorphosis to their style of play.
Their traditional grit and hard marking game was no longer viable as the talent that this team has could make teams to think twice about going out to attack this team.
Colombia
Absentees
For Colombia, there was only one of note and it was not due to bad performance. Pachuca defender Aquivaldo Mosquera was dropped from the squad after suffering a knee injury last week.
Meanwhile Tolima goalkeeper AgustÃn Julio was released as well, much to the criticism of the press in Colombia. Jorge Luis Pinto decided to go to Copa América with only two goalkeepers. So the typical “what if†arose when this scenario exists, but reached deaf ears.
The Big Issues
If you would like to see one deficiency in the Colombian defense, it is the fact that there is a huge lack at the right and left back positions. So much so that Jorge Luis Pinto was looking at placing Córdoba in one of those positions. This player was more than unwilling to do and caused a major stink inside the team locker room.
Defensive midfielders Fabián Vargas and Jhon Viáfara need to coordinate more as far as who will stay to defend and who will go on the attack. There were a few instances in the Ecuador game this weekend where they would both move up and others where they would both stay, but not know which space to mark. If these two are able to get it together, it will give their experimented backline a great deal of relief.
Good Run of Form
The Colombian press looks at this team and sees it as a dark horse and have expectations of being a semifinalist. Regardless of this, they have learned from experience that expectations are nothing until you get there. There is no doubt that outside of Big Two, they are one of the teams that could give them trouble.
Paraguay
Absentees
The most surprising was that of Borrusia Dortmund forward Nelson Haedo Valdéz. He, as well as midfielder Carlos Paredes were not even on Martino’s 27-man roster well over a week ago.
How Do They Come Out?
Gerardo Martino looks to be more convinced of the starting lineup a day away from the match against Colombia. He decided to have Claudio Morel RodrÃguez in the middle. Although there is a possibility that recently nationalized Jonathan Santana could be an option as well and that could have the Boca Juniors defender to move to the left. But their main source of preoccupation needs to be that of controlling a David Ferreira from making a connection with either Rodallega and Perea.
Valdes Criticized Martino
Werder Bremen forward Nelson Haedo Valdes criticized the Paraguayan national team coach after omitting him from the final 22-man roster for the Copa América. A few days later Valdéz turned around and apologized publicly to Martino about the “misunderstandingâ€.
Martino explained that he did not consider the player as he wanted to see him recover in time for World Cup qualifiers. _________________

If Colombia are able to establish the pace and control possession, their chances to win become that much greater... Seeing that both squads come to this match in good form, the team with better ball handling skills will have the upper hand... _________________

will be killed totally by Colombian people ?? I dont think so...
well, Colombia lost 5-0 against Paraguay. Colombia missed a penalty then the game turned to Paraguay. just at the 20th second of 2nd half, it was 2-0. and when the game finished, it was 5-0 good one for Paraguay. _________________

Argentina - USA Preview - Match 6 Grupo C
In a tough group that also includes Paraguay and Colombia, both sides will be eager make a strong start.
Argentina may perhaps be more wary of their opponents following Brazil's surprise 2-0 defeat to Mexico, which underlined how open the tournament could be.
Unlike Brazil, however, the Argentine squad is full of familiar names and bears a formidable look.
Coach Alfio Basile has already named his starting XI and has opted to leave out Carlos Tevez, going instead for Lionel Messi and Hernan Crespo.
The returning Juan Sebastian Veron and Juan Roman Riquelme will look to pull the strings behind the front two, and will be joined in midfield by Javier Mascherano and Esteban Cambiasso.
Roberto Abbondanzieri will line up in goal and will be shielded by a back four of Javier Zanetti, Roberto Ayala, Gabriel Milito and Gabriel Heinze.
USA triumphed in the Gold Cup at the weekend, as goals from Landon Donovan and Benny Feilhaber secured a 2-1 victory over Mexico.
However, Bob Bradley has selected a largely young and inexperienced squad for the Copa America. Of the 22 players, 14 have seven caps or fewer.
Key players such as Donovan, Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Tim Howard and Brian Ching have been left out.
Kansas City Wizards' Eddie Johnson and Taylor Twellman of New England Revolution will lead the attack.
Goalkeeper Kasey Keller and defender Jay DeMerit are two players with Premier League experience in an otherwise under-strength side, but Bradley does not believe Argentina should be feared.
"To have a little respect for your rival is good, but too much respect is bad," said Bradley.
"We respect Argentina, but we will go out there as equals." _________________
