Uruguay - Bolivia - Match 7 / Round 2 - Grupo A
San Cristobal is the destination for Bolivia's game with Uruguay, which will likely go a long way to determine who qualifies from Group A of the Copa America.
Thus far and the tournament has been characterised by shock results, as Mexico beat Brazil and, more pertinently, Uruguay were soundly beaten by unfancied Peru in their opening game.
Uruguay headed into the tournament with genuine aspirations but a miserable performance against Peru did little to enhance their prospects. As such, their coach Oscar Washington Tabarez is expected to make several changes for the Bolivia clash.
It has been intimated that star man Alvaro Recoba could figure at some stage, albeit most likely from the bench.
There will, though, be almost certainly changes from the side that started against Peru, with Dario Rodriguez, Maximiliano Pereira and Andres Scotti primed for promotion from the bench.
Bolivia's opening game was a 2-2 stalemate with Venezuela, which they will most likely be content with, given Uruguay's defeat as they spy a qualifying spot.
One familiar face amongst English supporters will be that of former Middlesbrough striker Jaime Moreno and it will be he that leads Bolivia's attack.
Bolivia coach Erwin Sanchez is confident that his charges are steadily improving and he is hopeful of another bright performance against Uruguay.
"Step by step we are growing, we are going to maintain the same attitude and a new identity," he said.
"It does not interest us to sit back, it is good for us to maintain the impetus and be offensive." _________________

Venezuela - Peru - match 8/ round 2 - Grupo A
If the opener on Tuesday was being billed as “the biggest game in Venezuelan football historyâ€, then you could argue that the match against Peru could be even bigger than that.
Coming into this tournament, Group A looked like a set-up for the home side to easily cruise through to the quarterfinals. Unfortuantely for the Vinotinto, an inspired opponent accompanied by a pinch of lack of support, a heavy dose of stage fright, and a blown in the waning moments of the match led to an unimpressive draw.
Peru exceeded expectations, held a clinic in Mérida and started the tournament off with a huge upset, only to be outdone by Mexico hours later. Julio César Uribe’s men are in great form. The team for the most part is healthy. You know this is the case when the most notable injury was the coach’s.
What is the Big Difference
I guess Ray Hudson said it best when he mentioned that when he said that the Peruvians are now more defensively responsible. There is a certain balance to their attack. That you would have to credit Uribe, whose reputation of wanting to play the game with elegance has followed him since his playing days.
As a player, Uribe criticized former América (COL) manager Gabriel Ochoa Uribe calling him “scared and too defensiveâ€. As part of that Golden Era of Peruvian football, Uribe also helped the old stigma of “Peru attacks, Peru attacks, Peru attacks… and Brazil scores†slowly become part of their recent past.
This, in addition to the affirmation of their younger European talent like Jefferson Farfán, Claudio Pizarro, and Paolo Guerrero look to make the Inca side a force to be reckoned with in the short term as well as when World Cup qualifiers roll around.
Rojas Out
Defender Jorge Rojas will be out of the match after suffering a knee injury after not having the referee Reinoso call a penalty kick in the dying moments of the match. The squad has a small beacon of light towards the future. Sánchez, a favorite with the players, will have whatever starting XI he fields give 100%.
This is what is most dangerous for any squad that faces the Bolivians. Sánchez has shown his optimism over the youthful squad . “You always have to have hope. You have to always be patient, this team is young and they need their time (to develop). We have worked on some things and they are responding properly,†said Sánchez.
Are They Ready For The Spotlight?
I mention this in my previous preview, but it seems like they are miserably failing. The crowd in Maracaibo had the same type of excitement that you would have prior to a root canal.
Either they weren’t interested or Hugo Chávez forgot his “Cheer†and “Applause†cue cards. Ricardo Páez had to tell his fans to root for the squad because they were apparently waiting for the seventh inning stretch.
Still Learning To Win
Just because the fans weren’t screaming doesn’t mean that the squad had to play at the level they did. With 30 minutes left, they began to exhibit a bunker mentality - just booting every single ball that was in the vicinity of the 18 yards instead of playing it out like they did in the previous 60 minutes.
Their mentality as a team is still infantile at times. One example from Tuesday’s game was when they were on the attack and got to the Bolivian box only to kick the ball out of bounds because an opposing player was down. The Bolivians then booted the ball back to them for a throw-in deep in their defensive area.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Venezuela: Juan Arango
Venezuela’s offense lives and dies with “Arangol†at the helm. Venezuela was saved by Maldonado and the coach’s son, if not the match would have been for the Bolivians. Arango did not show up against Bolivia.
If he does not show up in his match, there is a possibility that he might be the biggest disappointment of the tournament as everything was sent up for him to be the man. His ability to spread the offense, being a scoring threat off the dribble as well as from the outside gives the Vinotinto more dynamic.
Peru: Jefferson Farfán
The PSV man is on a roll. Even though he did not score, he set up the first goal and on Tuesday. His speed and ability shoot from the outside could overshadow anything that Juan Arango can do.
With an organized squad and team that can establish the pace, he will be the man to stop if Venezuela have any pretensions later on. Unfortunately, he is not just the only cog in the machine. If he does get marked, expect Claudio Pizarro and Paolo Guerrero to go nuts.
PROBABLE LINE-UPS
Venezuela
Vega, González, Cichero, Rey, Rouga, Vera, Mea Vitali, Páez, Arango, Maldonado, De Ornelas.
Peru
Butrón, Villalta, RodrÃguez, Acasiete, Galliquio, Bazalar, VÃlchez, GarcÃa, Farfán, Guerrero, Pizarro. _________________

Mexico - Ecuador Match 9/Round 2- Grupo B
Since 2000, these two teams have met three times, and each time, Mexico has come out on top. In fact, Mexico has dominated this tilt with 9 wins in 13 games. They last time them faced off was also on neutral ground, a friendly in March in the United States, a match taken by el Tri, 4-2.
But this Ecuador team is a different type of side. After their head-turning performance at the World Cup in Germany, they arrived in Venezuela as a critics’ darling. Things haven’t turned out the way they expected, but they are still a strong side. First, though, their defense must stop making silly mistakes, or else they will be going home early.
The stakes are high in this match. Both teams need these points. For Mexico, a win would put them into the knockout round, while if Ecuador has any hope of advancing, they must have three points. _________________

Brazil - Chile match 10 / Round 2 - Grupo B
Brazil face Chile on Sunday looking to get their Copa America campaign back on track.
The holders suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening game in Group B leaving them bottom of the group.
Brazil coach Dunga is keen to ease the pressure growing on him after an indifferent start to his managerial career.
Anderson is pushing for a place in the starting line-up after impressing as a substitute against Mexico.
Brazil will be without Lyon striker Fred after he broke his foot in training and former Arsenal man Julio Baptista could start in attack.
Goalkeeper Doni is expected to keep his place between the sticks despite coming under fire for his performance against Mexico.
Arsenal midfielder Gilberto Silva is set to captain Brazil as they look to pick up their first points of the tournament.
Chile go into the game in good heart after their thrilling 3-2 win over Ecuador.
Humberto Suazo is expected to lead the line for Chile after his two-goal show against Ecuador.
Carlos Villanueva is pushing for a place in Nelson Acosta's starting XI after scoring the winner against Ecuador.
Liverpool's Mark Gonzalez is expected to keep his place wide on the left as Chile look to book their place in the next round with another victory. _________________

Argentina - Colombia -match11/Round 2 - Grupo C
Having been thumped to the tune of 5-0 at the hands of Paraguay in their opening Copa America Group C clash, it would be fair to suggest Colombia are preparing to face Argentina as the proverbial lambs to the slaughter.
Paraguay may have been impressive but Colombia will be well aware their own exertions will not live long in the memory, some critics arguing their performance was as yellow as their shirts.
Argentina, on the contrary, were impressive in coming from behind against USA to swagger to a 4-1 victory, which saw Chelsea's exiled striker Hernan Crespo score twice.
Also on the scoresheet for the Argentines were the irrepressible duo Carlos Tevez and Pablo Aimar, not a bad pair of substitutes for coach Alfio Basile to call on.
Of the two it is Aimar that has the greater chance of earning a starting berth against Colombia, with Esteban Cambiasso the candidate to make way, should Basile elect for a more attack-minded selection.
Otherwise, Argentina will likely be unchanged, as Basile demands a similar display from his charges.
"We are not going to get carried away," warned Basile. "Each encounter is a separate entity.
"We are going to continue in the same way."
Colombia coach Jorge Luis Pinto has the difficult task of raising his troops and, in a time-honoured tradition, has used a boxing metaphor to do just that.
"The football player knows when there is a chance to change. We are going away to recover like the boxer who is struck and fell, but rose and could win."
It seems likely that Macnelly Torres will be promoted from the bench in place of Alvaro Dominguez, with Gabriel Luiz Rey also in contention after a substitute appearance against Paraguay.
Colombia may be praying for a major upset, but Argentina will be expecting a knockout. _________________
