USA - Paraguay match 12/ Round 2 - Grupo C

Paraguay can book their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a victory over United States on Monday night.

Gerardo Martino's side produced a superb performance to beat Colombia 5-0 in their opening match in Group C, whilst their opponents suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Argentina.

Bob Bradley's Gold Cup winners must shake off their opening game disappointment if they are to keep their hopes of progressing alive, and face a tough prospect in trying to tame Paraguay's front-line.

Roque Santa Cruz hit a hat-trick in the win over Colombia and Bradley is only too aware of the quality of the Bayern Munich striker.

"Santa Cruz poses a big threat in every game," Bradley told AP. "He's able to hold the ball and to bring players into the match, and he also has the ability to get behind the defence as we saw against Colombia.

"Overall, Paraguay is a good team with a couple of very, very talented individuals."

United States defender Jonathan Bornstein will incur a one-match ban if he adds to his booking against Argentina, and Bradley will be keen to avoid losing a key man in an inexperienced squad that contains 16 players with ten caps or less.

If Paraguay triumph over United States, and Colombia fail to beat Argentina in the other game in Group C, then they will be guaranteed of a quarter-final place.

Boca Juniors star Claudio Morel is a doubt due to a muscle problem though, meaning Aureliano Torres of San Lorenzo may deputise.

Following his side's tremendous opening day win, coach Martino is at pains to ensure Paraguay do not let their confidence translate into complacency.

"The United States have just won the Gold Cup and are a good team with players who could surprise us," said Martino.

"Our task is to beat the United States' game and to try not to let the victory over Colombia affect us."

Peru - Bolivia match 13/ Round 3 - Grupo A

Victory would secure Peru's place in the last eight and could see them go through as group winners, depending on the later result between Venezuela and Uruguay.

Peru lost 2-0 to the hosts on Saturday but were impressive in beating Uruguay 3-0 in their opening match and will be hoping to regain that form in Merida.

Coach Julio Caesar Uribe has yet to decide on Peru's formation but is considering changes following the defeat to Venezuela.

"I am reviewing our tactics and we will need to be very precise," said Uribe.

Peru are expected to line up in a 4-4-2 system with Juan Marino replacing Pedro Garcia.

New Chelsea signing Claudio Pizarro has a thigh problem but the injury is being treated by team doctor Hugo Blacido and he is likely to be risked.

Bolivia must win to have any chance of progressing after collecting just one point from their first two games, a a 2-2 draw with Venezuela and a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

Three points for Bolivia would probably take them through to the quarter-finals as one of the best third-placed teams.

Key midfielder Ronald Garcia will miss the clash due to a knee injury and will not be able to play again for approximately ten days.

Juan Carlos Arce and Jaime Moreno will again lead Bolivia's attack.

Venezuela - Uruguay match14 / Round 3 - Grupo A

Copa America hosts Venezuela play Uruguay safe in the knowledge that they have already qualified to the competition's latter stages.

A partisan Venezuelan faithful have been delighted with the exertions of their compatriots thus far, with an opening game 2-2 stalemate with Bolivia, having been followed by a 2-0 win over Peru.

Although they have already secured a quarter-final spot, Venezuela coach Richard Paez has urged his charges not to rest on their laurels, as he eyes top spot in Group A.

"I have a group that is already convinced that when they enter the field they do so to win," he declared confidently.

"We have a single mission, the mission is to win, not to go for a spectacular result."

Paez will not though be able call on the services of the suspended Ricardo David Paez, which could mean a call-up for either Cesar Gonzalez or Alejandro Guerra from the bench.

Uruguay's opener against Peru proved to be a match-made in hell for their coach Oscar Washington Tabarez, as they crashed to a shock 3-0 defeat, but things have improved since then. In the next game Uruguay beat Bolivia to keep alive their hopes of a quarter-final spot.

It is expected that Tabarez will not make too many changes, having clearly been enthused with what he saw in his side's last outing.

"If I say yes (that Uruguay can win the Copa America) I would sound a vain person," said Tabarez.

"But I would say it is important not to put down dreams, so I would say, with the exception of Brazil and Argentina, we have the same possibility of the rest."

Mexico - Chile match 15 / Round 3 - Grupo B

Hugo Sanchez's Mexico have already secured their spot in the last eight with victories over Brazil and Ecuador in their opening two games.

Chile, however, still have some work to do, but a point will be enough to ensure they go through as one of the best third-placed teams at the very worst.

Even defeat against Mexico may be enough for Chile to advance, but they would have to hope results elsewhere go their way.

Coach Nelson Acosta could be without up to six players for the crucial final game against Mexico due to injuries and suspension.

Miguel Riffo and Rodrigo Melendez will not be risked and Jorge Valdivia, Reinaldo Navia and Matias Fernandez are doubts, while Jorge Vargas is suspended.

With qualification for the quarter-finals already assured, Mexico will make changes for the game at Estadio Olimpico Luis Ramos.

Nery Castillo is expected to sit out the Chile fixture, with the striker one booking away from missing the quarter-final, so Cuauhtemoc Blanco is set to start in his place.

Sanchez also wants to keep as many of his players as fresh as possible for the latter stages of the competition.

"I expect quite a few changes because players feel a bit tired after the Brazil and Ecuador games," he said.

However, the Mexico coach is determined to finish the group stage with a 100 per cent record and also secure top spot in Group B.

"We want to finish this stage on top of the group," Sanchez added. "We want to beat Chile and the players who will be fielded want to win too. There is no other option but to win."

Brazil - Ecuador match 16 / Round 3 - Grupo B

Dunga’s Brazil look likely to make it through to the quarter-finals after the retching debut against Mexico was gulped back down with the win over Chile. The third and final Group B match will see the Seleção cocked and locked for what some see as little more than shooting fish in a barrel as Brazil take on group minnows Ecuador in Puerto La Cruz.

With all due respect to an Ecuador that held their heads high in Germany last summer, La Tri (Three Colours, the female pronoun reflecting shirt and flag in contrast to the Mexican team’s male pronoun) seem set to bow out with another glorious failure – although they could well send shockwaves through South America by taking Brazil with them.

Brazil have a slight positive goal average of 1 (3-2) thanks to Robinho; the Real Madrid number 10 outweighing the Mexican brace with a personal hat-trick, while Ecuador were downed twice by the slimmest of margins. This leaves La Tri with an uphill struggle at the bottom of Group B and lugging a 3-5 and -2 goal average compounded by a zero-point haul so far.

Chile are nipping at the Brazilian (Achilles) heels, La Roja waiting to take advantage of a Brazilian draw or defeat…if they can down a Mexico who come to the table satiated with the quarter-final classification in the bag. Given the possibility of grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory, Brazil are wisely taking nothing for granted.

Colombia - USA match 17 / Round 3 - Grupo C

Colombia and the United States share the bottom spot in Group C, and following Tuesday’s predictable results, both are already mathematically eliminated from the Copa America. All that’s left to play for is pride.

In their last matches, both sides had chances, but couldn’t capitalize. The Cafeteros lost to Argentina 4-2, despite taking an early lead through Edixon Perea. They then gave up four straight goals, and missed several chances to equalize late.

The USA lost to Paraguay 3-1. The score was knotted at halftime, and the USA had two glorious open looks at goal when it was still 2-1, but their dismal finishing let them down and they eventually gave up a late icer.

These two countries have met 14 times on the soccer field, with Colombia taking 8 victories and drawing three others. The biggest tilt was in the group stages of the 1994 World Cup, when the United States upset the favored Colombians 2-1 in Pasadena, CA.

Argentina - Paraguay match 18 / Round 3 - Grupo C

DEADLY ATTACK

The Argentine squad consists of the best attack in world football at the moment. They have proven that their players give results with two splendid displays that saw them score eight goals in their first two group matches. Crespo’s thigh injury put an end to his tournament, and he is likely to be replaced by Real Zaragoza star Diego Milito, who scored Argentina’s last goal in the victory over Colombia on Monday. Alfio Basile’s other attacking options include West Ham’s Carlos Tevez, and Boca Juniors’ Rodrigo Palacio. Argentina are aware of their depth in the attack, and will look to make the most of a Paraguay side that showed their deficiencies against a weak American side. The latest news to come from the Argentine camp is that both Palacio and Tevez will start in the attack.

BIGGEST TEST

Argentina’s clash with Paraguay will determine how good they actually are. Alfio Basile’s side will get their first real test of the competition against a side that they usually have lots of difficulty against. If they aren’t in top form the Paraguayans are likely to take advantage of this, particularly because they also have an envious strike-force of Roque Santa Cruz and Oscar Cardozo, two players that have been very impressive in the competition so far. Paraguay also has Club America’s Salvador Cabanas coming on off the bench. The deadly striker has already scored three times in the competition, despite his limited time on the field. He is likely to have a starting role against Argentina, thanks to the impressive free-kick he converted against the United States in injury time of their last match.

WINNING IS A MUST

In order for Argentina to avoid Mexico in the quarterfinals, and a possible semifinal meeting with Brazil they must defeat Paraguay. Despite scoring eight goals in their first two matches they have an inferior goal difference to Paraguay, who are also on eight goals, but having conceded two goals less. If Paraguay don’t lose they will face an assessable Peru side in the next round, so a positive result is essential for their title aspirations. Unlike the other matches in the tournament, the result of this match is likely to have a bearing on both teams. The winner will avoid Brazil, right until the final.

DIP IN FORM

Paraguay may have defeated the United States 3-1, but their performance didn’t reflect the score-line. They made the most of their opportunities, with good finishing, but were fortunate to pick up the result. The young Americans dominated them during large periods of the match, but failed to convert several clear goal-scoring opportunities. If Paraguay don’t improve by a great deal in defense, they will be unable to hold the talented Argentines, who have proven that they take advantage of most of their scoring chances. If Paraguay want to stand a chance they must be at the same level as when they crushed Colombia 5-0 in their group opener.
