Copa América Quarter-Final Preview: Brazil - Chile

Its time for a rematch with a distinct grudge flavour as the Seleção meet La Roja for the second time within a week on Venezuelan soil. The first face-off saw Brazil come out on top thanks to a dubious Vágner Love penalty converted by Robinho, the Real Madrid star going on to cement the 3-0 win with another two goals.

Despite the apparently ample score pointing to a stroll in the park for Dunga’s men it was far from an easy task. Chilean Coach Nelson Acosta had stewed in his own juice after the game, claiming that Brazil hadn’t deserved to win – and he had a point. Unfortunately the counterpoint was that he was unable to bring out the best in a La Roja who didn’t deserve a win either.

The previous match took place in Maturín, Robinho – despite his hat-trick being pooh-poohed by Acosta and provocation that included La Roja number 10 Valdivia placing the ball over Robinho’s mouth – was the undisputed star of the Seleção. It could be argued that he shone late and in the absence of decent support, but he was, nevertheless, the only player to shine on either side.

FIFA actually moved the fixture from the initial venue of Estadio La Carolina in Barinas because of low capacity, the game moved to the Estadio Olímpico Luis Ramos in the town of Puerto La Cruz in the eastern state of Anzoátegui. Both sides know the ground as Brazil managed to beat Ecuador there while Chile drew 0-0 with Mexico, so there is now a very logical reason for not forcing both sides to face an unnecessary journey elsewhere.

It’s actually the second change in venue as the first choice was Maracaibo's 40,000-capacity Jose Encarnacion Romero before it was moved to the 27,500-capacity stadium in Barinas…the home state of a certain Hugo Chavez, outspoken President of Venezuela. Sadly for the man who has a strange interpretation of the concept of freedom of speech FIFA said the smaller stadium was "insufficient to accommodate a match of this nature."

The President had to make do with seeing the USA downed 3-1 by Paraguay in the only match to take place in the Agustín Tovar (La Carolina) stadium. Fortunately for fans the move to Puerto La Cruz will also avert any potential demonstrations against the leader who has warned protestors that he will come down hard on any dissent during the Copa América. Thankfully it seems that the muddy world of politics will not splatter the Brazil-Chile match ….fingers crossed.

Back to the simpler, better world of football: the winner of the Brazil-Chile match will go through to play the first semi-final on Tuesday 10/07/2007. Either the Seleção or La Roja will go through to meet the winner of Saturday’s earlier (19:05 local time) quarter-final clash between underdog hosts Venezuela and favourites Uruguay in San Cristóbal

Copa America Quarter-Final Preview: Venezuela-Uruguay

Copa America hosts Venezuela will face Uruguay for the second time in four days, after both teams played out a dull goalless draw in the final round of the group phase. To many it was the worst match of the competition, as hardly any goal-scoring opportunities were created during the ninety minutes. But this time both teams will look to impress in order to secure a place in the semifinals.

BREAKING RECORDS

Venezuela are not only making history for hosting their first-ever Copa America, but are also doing this with their football. Their 2-0 defeat of Peru last Saturday was their first Copa America victory since 1967, and a few days later they qualified for the quarterfinals for the first time after their 0-0 draw with Uruguay. This shows that Venezuelan football has grown immensely, and their success in the tournament is likely to help it keep growing. Venezuela’s overall statistics in the Copa America are extremely disappointing, as they’ve recorded only two victories. They are the team that has fallen the most with thirty-seven losses, and nine draws. Venezuela previously had never come close to reaching the second round, and a quarterfinal victory over Uruguay will qualify them for the semifinals. A semifinal place with make them start dreaming of a grand final appearance, and possibly with the title.

NEEDING INSPIRATION

Venezuela could not reproduce the form that saw them overcome Peru in their last encounter against Uruguay. The Vinotinto’s attack was inexistent, and they looked nervous on the ball, although they had already sealed their qualification to the quarterfinals before the match. From what we have seen so far there’s no doubt they’ve been inconsistent. Players like Juan Arango, Giancarlo Maldonado, and Jose Rey haven’t lived up to the expectation, but will have another opportunity against Uruguay. It’s evident that they do lack quality in every sector of the field, but they can make up for this with the right fighting spirit. Against Uruguay they have to push forward or their title aspirations could come to an end.

LARGEST DISAPPOINTMENT?

Uruguay came into the tournament, as one of the favourites, because of their excellent squad and the results in their preparation matches. But they’ve been a huge deception, particularly because they’ve only found the back of the net once after three matches. Uruguay's attack has been highly disappointing, as strikers Diego Forlan and Vicente Sanchez have made little impact. Their only players that had impressed during the group phase were goalkeeper Fabian Carini, and midfielders Cristian Rodriguez and Diego Perez. Carini’s performance against Venezuela could determine Uruguay’s fate in the competition. After the tie with Venezuela a poll conducted in the country determined Uruguay as the most boring team in the competition.

MODERN FOOTBALL

In the past Uruguay would defeat teams like Venezuela by huge margins, but things have changed so much to the extent that now they are the ones who are struggling. In a qualifier for last year's World Cup in Germany Venezuela defeated Uruguay 3-0 in Montevideo, making it the first-ever victory for the Venezuelans in Uruguay. Before the commencement of the Copa America Uruguayan star Alvaro Recoba told me the reason for this is because all the nations in the continent have improved, while Uruguay still play with an old fashioned style. This is clearly evident, and is one of the reasons why they have only been able to score once in the tournament so far. Venezuela’s football has modernized incredibly over the last few years, but they still have lots of room for improvement.

ALVARO RECOBA?

Recoba missed Uruguay’s opener against Peru due to injury, but since then was in good shape and at Oscar Washington Tabarez’s disposal. But the manager never selected him for their next match, and he only came on as a late substitute against Venezuela. In this match Recoba proved that he has the quality that Uruguay was lacking, and he could be their main inspiration, as after all he has been the team’s main idol since Diego Forlan came to fame. But reports indicate he will be on the bench again, although it hasn’t been confirmed. Could Recoba be a late addition to the side in what will be his last Copa America? Uruguay’s fans hope so, as his undisputed talent could turn around their fortune.

Argentina v Mexico

VERY EVEN CONTEST

The two best teams in the Copa America will clash in what is expected to be one of the best matches in the tournament. Both Argentina and Mexico are undefeated so far, and come from emphatic victories in the quarterfinals. While Mexico hammered Paraguay 6-0, Argentina crushed Peru 4-0. An interesting point is that both teams are likely to be without their star strikers for the clash. As while Argentina lost Hernan Crespo early on in the tournament after picking up an injury, Mexico are unlikely to be able to count on Nery Castillo, who was injured in the Paraguay match, after scoring twice. Still, both teams have numerous players that can turn on the style and it is expected to be a fascinating encounter.

ARGENTINA HAVE THE UPPERHAND

The Argentines have a history of knocking off the Mexicans over the years. In Mexico’s first-ever Copa America participation in 1993, they met in a final that Argentina went on to win 2-1 in Ecuador. Since then, and after many international friendlies, as well as major competitions Argentina has continued to come out in front. In last year’s World Cup in Germany they met in the round of sixteen, and Argentina came from behind to win 2-1, with that memorable Maxi Rodriguez winner, that we are unlikely to ever forget. Argentina definitely have the upper hand over Peru, and have won most of the encounters between the teams over the years. Argentina are tied with Uruguay on 14 Copa America titles, their last being in 1993, while Mexico have never won the competition, although they’ve reached the final twice before. Including all statistics the Argentines are the most successful team in the history of the competition, while the Mexicans lie in tenth position.

SERIOUSLY ATTACKING TEAMS

The Argentines have proven that their players give results in the attack, scoring thirteen times in the Cope America so far. There’s no question Argentina’s attack is the best in the world, as they count on players with the caliber of Carlos Tevez, Diego Milito, Lionel Messi, Rodrigo Palacio, and Hernan Crespo [injured]. Then in midfield they have an attacking essence as well with Juan Roman Riquelme, who has been scoring frequently, Juan Sebastian Veron, Esteban Cambiasso, and Pablo Aimar. Could you believe Liverpool’s Javier Mascherano has also joint the attack, scoring twice in Argentina’s last two matches. But Mexico counters with several talented attacking players, like top scorer Nery Castillo [likely injured], Adolfo Bautista, Omar Bravo, Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Juan Carlos Cacho. These players aren’t quite at the level of the Argentines, but they are still all world class strikers that have proven that they can find the back of the net with ten goals between them.
