Nearly 3 years ago to the day, Hungarian international of 25 caps, Miklós Fehér died of a heart attack shortly after scoring the winner for SL Benfica during the away game at Vitória Sport Clube de Guimarães.

I am posting this now because there are already preparations under way to honour his memory over the next 2 weekends either side of the actual day.

Miklós 'Miki' Fehér was a true gentleman of the game, he played with a smile on his face, he played a clean game and endeared himself to fans and players of the clubs he played for, his death brought condolences from many former team mates and former opponents on the pitch, the mark he had left was far reaching. Miki was a player about whom people only had good things to say.

The day following his death, the hearse brought his body from Guimarães to Lisbon to Benfica's new Estádio da Luz, the coffin was carried into the grand entrance hall by club captain, Hélder, club vice captain (and captain the night of his death), Simão Sabrosa, and players Miguel, Nuno Gomes, Argel and Zlato Zahovic. The coffin was placed in front of the giant stone eagle that had previously stood above the entrance of the old stadium and was draped in scarves and shirts of clubs from all over the world. Rivalry was forgotten as fans of Sporting and Porto were present to pay their last respects to Miki. While scarves of countless clubs adorned the eagle, Miki's number 29 shirt was laid over his coffin as club president, Luis Felipe Vieira announced that, out of respect, no one would ever wear number 29 in a Benfica shirt again.

A plane was chartered to transport Benfica's squad and Miki's body to Hungary for the funeral, where many Hungarian players past and present were in attendance. Miki had been seen as the future of Hungarian football after their team's failure to qualify for Euro 2004 and Miki starting to find his form at Benfica.

Every Superliga game the following weekend was preceeded by a minute's silence in memory of Miki. Benfica's game against Académica was postponed until the Tuesday to allow the squad time to return from Hungary. This would be the club's final farewell to Miki. The 2 ultras groups prepared their own tributes, the Diabos Vermelhos (Red Devils) placed red and white T-Shirts on the seats in their corner of the stadium so that they would show the number 29. The 'No Name Boys' held up cards that spelt out 'Fehér Play' to demonstrate the style they hoped the game would be played in. The players did their bit for the tribute aswell, both teams came out onto the pitch wearing white T-shirts with Miki's photo on the front and his number on the back. Following the pre game minute's silence, the Benfica team removed their T-shirts to reveal their normal club shirts, all bearing their own numbers, above which was written simply, Fehér. Académica's Kaká was granted permission from the FPF (Federação Portuguesa de Futebol) to change his number from 29 to 99 for this game as a mark of respect. When Zlato Zahovic headed Benfica into the lead, all the players congregated together and pointed skywards.

One final tribute came later during this game, Académica's fans held up a huge banner with Fehér's shirt on it. The sell out crowd at Estádio da Luz all rose as one to applaud the gesture.

Even now, current shirts can be seen with the number 29 and Fehér printed on them, this trajedy made a big impression on everyone connected with the club.

RIP Miklós Miki Fehér - Nunca Caminharás Sozinho

I've heard of him, I have heard about his death 3 years ago in one of the soccer magazines I read. Shame he perished so young.

4 years ago, Marc Vivien Foe also died on the court. They were all young players who deserved better life and career.

I was very shocked when I heard it!I had just arrived at home after school and I watched the news when I heard his death!I remember that I had shivered when I heard it and saw a video, which was devoted to him....he was a great player!I wish all we'll remember him, despite his short career, because I believe that now he would be one of the best football players...
until now I shiver when I remember that day...

There are some tribute videos on YouTube with pictures of that tragic match but I don't really want to post any links, because the vids are still very shocking... Sad
BTW: His sister works or worked as a model in Portugal...
